RB Smokin’ BBQ – Paso Robles, CA – New BBQ Joint

Got wind of a new BBQ joint in Paso Robles, California from Sanluisobispo.com called RB Smokin’ BBQ in Paso Robles, California. There really isn’t a whole lot of low and slow BBQ as you get north of Los Angeles (it seems the style is more Santa Maria Style BBQ as opposed to anything else).

I got so excited about having a low and slow bbq joint in my neck of the woods (about 2 hours north actually) that I decided to call up owner Doug McCurdy himself to get additional information. Per Doug everything is made from scratch (sauces, dry rubs, corn bread, sides, etc.) and they even make their own sausage by hand.

They smoke everything on a Smokin Tex Electric Smoker over apple and hickory.

“All of our meats are smoked to perfection. Pulled pork is smoked 6-8 hours, brisket is smoked for 16 hours, chicken is smoked for 4 hours, ribs are smoked for 5-6 hours, and meatloaf (yes meatloaf) is smoked for 2 hours).”

They opened November 22nd and even though there were people that said they would have to ‘grill’ their meats to please the masses in Central California, they’ve been well received (I am actually surprised more people don’t follow the lead of those across the country with slow cooking over indirect heat). Have you been to RB Smokin’ BBQ yet? I’d love to know your first impressions (or second and third).

  1. We tried this restaurant for the 1st time tonight. The baby back ribs were OK..as the review said, we’re used to BBQed over wood, so it’s a little different. The meat was very tender but dry and looked like it had been sitting around for a while. We also got the Chicken Caesar salad. YIKES…stay away from that one…The lettuce was so old that it was dark green and rotting in places. I tasted the chicken and it had a fishy flavor. We’re NOT going back to that place. Too bad the location is convenient but there are lots of other places to get good BBQ in Paso.

  2. Well I really love this place and am really excited it came in to Paso. I have gone their about 5 times since its opening and love it. I get the brisket ceasar chipotle salad and i love it. i also get a side of fried green beans which are so amazing and so creative. I think the service is great and its a great addition to our small town of Paso

  3. I really was hoping to try this place out, but I couldn’t get past the stupid expression they have chosen to use for their business.

Very distasteful. I can’t support that. To bad. We need a good BBQ place that concentrates on their food, and not just their theme.

  5. I eat barbecue, real barbecue “low and slow” all over the country and this stuff ain;t bad at all. Have the the ribs several times, always good, the brisket has been terrific and the sides are decent enough. Compares favorably with Mo’s in SLO.
