BBQ Video – Smoke City Market – Sherman Oaks, CA

Smoke City Market in Sherman Oaks is really close to getting it right. The first time I visited (see here) I definitely thought that I had finally had my go to joint for a real taste of Texas BBQ (that was until I got a brisket overnighted to me from John Mueller himself (read here). Smoke City Market is close though as they smoke their meats overnight, cut them to order, weigh them out, and serve them on trays on butcher paper just like the BBQ joints in Texas that I long to visit. They even have Shiner Bock.

The last time I went the BBQ was a little mediocre, but I’m giving them a chance to have an off night. If you do go, I recommend sticking to their brisket (moist if you want some good fat), their sausage (I prefer the jalapeno/cheddar), and their beef ribs (they run out of these early each night). This video below shows the beef ribs in all their glory:

Here’s a pic from my first visit:

Best Barbecue Joint – New York – Reader’s Poll

What is the best BBQ Joint in New York? There really isn’t a ‘New York’ style of BBQ, so instead it’s a mash up of styles from all four major BBQ regions with a dash of everything in between. This combined with incredible pitmasters (some of them with strong culinary backgrounds) provides for a wealth of potential joints to choose from.

Hill Country Barbecue Market – Washington DC – New BBQ Joint

I have friends (BBQ addicts and others) who tell me Hill Country Barbecue Market in New York is the best Texas BBQ outside of Texas. I do know they take their barbecue very seriously and from their website they say, “Taking a ‘cue’ from legendary barbecue establishment Kreuz Market and it’s distinctive, dry-rub style, Hill Country’s brisket, sausage, ribs, and other meats are smoked low and slow over Texas post oak. The barbecue is served in butcher paper, counter-style by the pound, with traditional trimmings.”

Hill Country Barbecue Market DC, their second establishment, opened to the public Saturday March 11th. You can read additional information from Urbandaddy.com here.

Greater Phoenix Area – New BBQ Joints

OK. First I read a story yesterday about the amazing rise of BBQ joints in Tampa, Florida (over 300 joints) and now I see this story at azcentral.com about the explosion of BBQ joints in the great Phoenix area. It is true that BBQ joints are popping up almost daily across the country.

From the piece, “forget typical ribs, spice-rubbed and tossed on a grill. A new group of Scottsdale-area barbecue masters is trotting out some white cloth-caliber fare, in inventive recipes that include ingredients as unexpected as oysters and sweetbreads.” That too is the case with high end BBQ joints popping up in Chicago as well as Detroit. You’ll find an incredible array of offerings that you won’t find at a typical BBQ joint. For some that’s great, but for the die hard BBQ fan, simple is sometimes more preferred.

Here are the three BBQ Joints highlighted:
Big Earl’s BBQ
Hammered BBQ Hall & Saloon
Bryan’s Black Mountain Barbecue

What’s your favorite Phoenix (or Arizona) BBQ Joint? Have you been to any of the three above?

Tampa, Florida Barbecue Renaissance – St. Petersburg Times

I had been noticing that there were a good number of BBQ Joints in Tampa, Florida when I was doing research for my BBQ Joint Search Engine, but after reading this article here I was shocked to hear their claim that there are over 300 BBQ joints in Tampa alone. That’s a TON of BBQ Joints for a city, however this info was from Urbanspoon which bunches anything with a reference of ‘BBQ’ into the BBQ category.

Photo of Holy Hog Barbecue, one of Tampa’s newest BBQ additions

Regardless, it’s amazing how many new BBQ joints are cropping up in Tampa and around the United States. As far as Tampa, from the article, “Ray Lampe (Dr. Barbecue) said Tampa is a real melting pot of barbecue, with unique barbecue styles representing different parts of the South, the Northeast, and the Midwest – all brought here by migrants.”

Here is a nice audio clip of Lampe and Tom Scherberger of the St. Petersburg Times .

Do you live in Tampa? What do you think of the growing BBQ scene? I would love to know your favorite BBQ joint in Tampa and the surrounding area.

BBQ Video – Blue Ribbon BBQ – Massachusetts

I haven’t had a chance to physically check out Blue Ribbon BBQ at either of their Arlington or Newton locations in Massachusetts, but I’ve only heard great things (and from the photos I’ve seen and emails I’ve received raving about them, I know it’ll be part of my East Coast BBQ tour later this year).

If you haven’t heard of them, here are two videos showing how they prepare their meats daily on their smokers by J & R Manufacturing.

Here’s a look at their ribs:

Here you can see their brisket:

Here are a couple of photos from one of my favorite BBQ blogs, Pigtrip.net to further whet your appetite:

Let me know if you’ve been to either spot and what your favorite meat (or side dish) they serve is.

Here are maps to both Blue Ribbon BBQ locations.

RB Smokin’ BBQ – Paso Robles, CA – New BBQ Joint

Got wind of a new BBQ joint in Paso Robles, California from Sanluisobispo.com called RB Smokin’ BBQ in Paso Robles, California. There really isn’t a whole lot of low and slow BBQ as you get north of Los Angeles (it seems the style is more Santa Maria Style BBQ as opposed to anything else).

I got so excited about having a low and slow bbq joint in my neck of the woods (about 2 hours north actually) that I decided to call up owner Doug McCurdy himself to get additional information. Per Doug everything is made from scratch (sauces, dry rubs, corn bread, sides, etc.) and they even make their own sausage by hand.

They smoke everything on a Smokin Tex Electric Smoker over apple and hickory.

“All of our meats are smoked to perfection. Pulled pork is smoked 6-8 hours, brisket is smoked for 16 hours, chicken is smoked for 4 hours, ribs are smoked for 5-6 hours, and meatloaf (yes meatloaf) is smoked for 2 hours).”

Best BBQ Joints – Kansas City – Readers Poll

What is the best barbecue joint in Kansas City? Is that answer even possible with so many amazing choices?

If you don’t know what Kansas City barbecue is, here’s a great primer from James Boo at Serious Eats, “Kansas City is known as the melting pot of barbecue. Walk up to a counter and you can find just about anything. Pulled pork, pork ribs, pork steak, beef brisket, smoked mutton, smoked chicken, and sliced turkey are all typically served with the city’s signature barbecue sauce: the thick, sweet, tomato-and-molasses based concoction that has become an American standard.”

So what is your favorite BBQ Joint in Kansas City? I’ll be running this question for a week and we’ll see what the BBQ community comes up with. Below is a list of potential choices, but please email, tweet, or comment below as to whatever joint (or joints) you feel should make the cut (if you provide multiple joints please provide a numerical value to each).
