If you’re up in the Bay Area (or visiting) and haven’t been to Phat Matt’s BBQ in Oakland, California you’re missing out. It’s the real deal slow and low BBQ from two really incredible and generous people (Matt and Charlotte). Here are some pics and some bio information below.
Here are the first pics from my visit to The Bear Pit Bar-B-Q in Mission Hills, California today. More pics and review to follow:
I was honored to be one of three judges for Gnarly Head Wine’s Rippin’ Ribs Tour which took place at The Comcast Bite of Seattle. From the venue, to the weather (OK. I admit I love rain), to the hospitality, it was all top notch. I can’t thank Gnarly Head enough for making my first judging experience so fantastic. Here are the pics:
Here’s a shot of the overall winner Frances Benthin showing her ribs on the smoker (note she rides a Harley, seriously, she does).
Shannon Stone Memorial Fundraiser in Dallas
Diane Mason Fourton of Pecan Lodge Catering and Jill Grobowsky Bergus of Lockhart Smokehouse were so moved by the tragic death of Lt. Shannon Stone at the Texas Rangers Game on July 7, 2011 that they have put aside barbecue competitiveness to help the family of the fallen firefighter with a fundraiser. The event will feature a barbecue dinner with smoked meats from both Pecan Lodge (D Magazine’s “Best BBQ” in Dallas winner for 2011) and Lockhart Smokehouse (our local Cathedral for carnivores), burnt end pizzas from Il Cane Rosso’s Jay Jerrier along with drinks, music and a live auction. The auction items are being finalized and will be announced soon.
Sponsors include Dallas Farmers Market, Texas BBQ Posse, Full Custom Gospel BBQ, Il Cane Rosso, Edible DFW, Crave DFW, Dallas Observer, Dallas Moring News, US Foods, Deep Eddy Vodka, Lonestar Beer, Dirt, Oh Brownie, Ain’t No Mo Butter Cakes, and Old World Sausage.
Local food and barbecue fans wishing to support the Stone family through this exciting event can purchase tickets, priced at $30 each at EventBrite

August 1 – I’m really excited about this week’s giveaway as it involves a great knife and some insanely good BBQ sauce. For the longest time people have asked that I have a giveaway that includes a BBQ tool so I’ve teamed up with BBQ Pro Shop to offer the following prize package:
1 – Guy Fieri Knuckle Sandwich 5.5″ Dragon Dagger
Whatever your opinion is of Guy Fieri is, his knives are first rate. This Knuckle Sandwich 5.5″ Dragon Dagger made by Ergo features a serrated blade and fork prongs on the tip to pick up food. This razor sharp knife was designed for slicing or trimming small cuts of meat, small fruits, veggies, cheese, breads and sandwiches. Would be pretty cool to own.
1 – Jar of Big Butz BBQ Sauce – Xtra Hot
This sauce is incredible. I can definitely vouch for it as it’s one of my favorite sauces of all times. Tom Porter from Big Butz BBQ creates very well balanced sauces that go great with pork, chicken, lamb, beef, and really just about anything. If you don’t win this giveaway you should figure out a way to get your hands on some for sure.

Here’s a nice behind the scenes look at City Meat Market in Giddings, Texas narrated by owner Gerald Birkelbach. I do warn you though not to watch this if you’re hungry.

This place looks incredible and I love the fact that they have the retail meat market in the front and the BBQ in the back.

In the video Mr. Birkelbach says that his joint has the best BBQ in Texas. Have you been here? What are your thoughts?
