Since I’ve been hanging out with the good people of Gnarly Head Wine, it’s fun to see some video of their first stop on their Rippin’ Ribs Tour 2011 which wonderfully is at the Memphis in May Champion Barbecue Competition this weekend. The video shows the ribs being presented from (4) rib cooks who are fighting for a chance to be on the first ever Gnarly Head BBQ Team and a chance at five grand.

I’m a sucker for first hand video shot for a BBQ joint. Of course my goal is to visit every BBQ joint in the country (and Canada), but since I haven’t been to every one yet, I have to live vicariously through videos. Here’s one of the iconic Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor, Texas courtesy of BootsOnTheGroundTX.

I found this great video of Kevin Pang’s (The Chicago Tribune) behind the scenes visit to one of the mecca’s of BBQ, 17th Street Bar and Grill in Murphysboro, Illinois where he gets a short personal tour (which of course means eating some baby back ribs) by “The Legend” Mike Mills himself. Man do I want to visit here soon. Please enjoy:

There aren’t that many videos online of Daisy May’s BBQ in New York, but here’s one that I’ve gone to time and time again because, well, it just looks so incredibly delicious. This is a clip from Michael Symon’s (Lola Bistro, Roast Detroit, B Spot Burgers, Lolita Restaurant, and Iron Chef America fame) visit to Daisy May’s in search of their dinosaur sized beef ribs for the show Best Thing I Ever Ate.

For those that don’t know, Daisy May’s BBQ is owned by Adam Perry Lang. Here’s a link to their restaurant menu. Here’s a little more info on him from my book review a while back.

Meyer Elgin’s Smokehouse in Elgin, Texas has been a featured player in the BBQ joint world since they opened in the late seventies. They are primarily known for their sausage, but from the reviews I’ve recently read, they serve up some really good BBQ as well.

To me, what makes a great BBQ joint video, is one that gives you the look and feel of the joint with a nice dash of local flavor. This one, from WeAreAustin, has all of that.

If you haven’t had a chance to sample Texas BBQ first hand, here some video from ManicAmerican chronicling their tour which included visits to Snow’s BBQ, Black’s Barbecue, Old School BBQ & Grill, Iron Works Barbecue, and Smitty’s Market. There are some moments of youthful craziness between BBQ joint visits that I recommend fast forwarding through for the good stuff.

I know it’s not Oscar award winning quality, but it does give you a nice inside and outside view of these iconic Texas BBQ joints. Have you been to any of these? Do you agree with the reactions and commentary in the video?

There has been a ton of buzz around the recently opened Pork Shoppe in Chicago, Illinois, so I was happy to find this video from WGNtv by Marcus Leshock where he covers Pork Shoppe and another Chicago newbie Smokey Bears BBQ House. Here it is (I’d go full screen to get the real feel of these BBQ joints):

Allen & Son Bar-B-Que in Chapel Hills, North Carolina is hands down one of the best bbq joints in the country. A little while back I posted a blog piece featuring Kevin Pang from the Chicago Tribune interviewing owner Keith Allen. If you missed it, you can see that again here.
