Backyard BBQ Concert with Dave Matthews

Just found this interesting. If you’re a Dave Matthews fan and want to see him up close and very personal (and have an unlimited amount of funds), you’re in luck. He’s doing a private concert (it’s a concert and BBQ) in Hidden Hills, CA on August 22nd at the home of Kim and Rob Cavallo (Rob produced one of Dave’s albums).

Tickets start at $ 1,000.00 each, but if money isn’t an object, you’ll have the Dave Matthews experience of a lifetime. The proceeds raised from the concert will go toward Heschel West’s Tuition Assistance program, which provides need-based scholarship to students. You can find more information about the concert here.

For that sort of price you better also get some of the best brisket, pulled pork, and ribs you’ve ever had. You can still purchase tickets here.

New BBQ Joint – Cowboy Way BBQ – Solvang, CA

When you think of Solvang, you think of a little, albeit touristy, Danish village with motels that have windmills, statues of Hans Christian Andersen and the Little Mermaid, and some really great breakfast spots (seriously) . So you wouldn’t expect to find a BBQ Joint crop up here. The Santa Barbara Independent is reporting that Cowboy Way BBQ just opened it’s doors in this city a stones throw from the Santa Ynez wine country. Here’s the story.

From the article, “Although he grew up grilling Santa Maria style, owner Daniel Placencia traveled to Kansas City, “Missouruh,” as he puts it, to perfect his southern BBQ skills before opening the first—wildly successful—The Cowboy Way BBQ restaurant in Palm Springs.”

If you’re interested in stopping by, here’s a map:

I’m about an hour south of here so I’ll stop by some time to give a full report. Until then, here’s a link to reviews of their Palm Springs joint:

BBQ Joint Takeover News – The Beach Pit BBQ

I’m a sucker for takeover news and learning what parent company owns what other smaller companies. Most times it would shock you to learn that your favorite product was owned by another completely different brand or even sister brands with brands that really don’t go together (take a look at this link for Kraft as an example).

On a little smaller than mega-brand news, according to the Orange County Register, Costa Mesa based The Beach Pit BBQ has acquired Huntington Beach based Smokin’ Mo’s BBQ. They are looking to further expand their BBQ brand throughout Orange County. Not sure if they are planning on keeping the Smokin’ Mo’s BBQ name or transitioning them to The Beach Pit BBQ. I have been to location in Newport Beach and was impressed with my meal.

To continue the Orange County connection, it’s interesting that Tim DeCinces, founder of The Beach Pit BBQ, is the son of former Angels third baseman Doug DeCinces.

Best and Worst BBQ Food – Yahoo! Health

David Zinczenko, author of Eat This, Not That has come out with his list of common BBQ items that you should or shouldn’t eat (not that this list will stop me or anyone I know who loves gorging themselves at holiday BBQ’s). He covers best/worst meat, side, snack, and salad. I think what really stuck out for me was the amount of sodium and saturated fat that some of these contain.

Here’s the list

Big Apple Block Part – Part 2

I’ve been trying to get my head around the hundreds of photos and tweets from those taking part in the event and those that are there for the amazing cue, so I came up with the idea to have links to the twitpic/tweetphoto/flickr pages and twitter accounts to easily jump in to see what’s happening (or get a good look back at the festivities). This will be added to as I get more.

Big Apple Block Party

I’ve always heard great things about the Big Apple Block Party, but never really knew much about it until this year, when I knew a few of the participants and paid a little more attention to what it was all about. In doing this though it made me much more jealous of the fact that (1) I wasn’t in New York this weekend and (2) I couldn’t sample all of the amazing BBQ. Seriously, if you’re anywhere near NYC this weekend you need to get over to Madison Square Park (Saturday and Sunday June 12-13 between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM).

Here’s the incredible line up and what they are preparing:

BBQ Joint of the Week – Phil’s BBQ – San Diego

A good friend of mine turned me on to this place about a year ago and now every time I go down to San Diego it is a must that I stop at Phil’s BBQ (they are opening a location in San Marcos, but I always hit up their Point Loma location).

Here’s where they are at:

Here’s what appears to be a commercial for Phil’s, but regardless, it makes me hungry just looking at it:

If you want to see how long the wait is (there generally is a wait of some sort, which of course means everything positive about their cue) you can check out their live cam that shows the line outside their door here

Even though I’m a lover of pretty much all things one could BBQ, I stick to the baby back ribs and beef ribs when I’m there. They cook them just right where they are almost fall off the bone yet so incredibly tender. Love their sauces as well and could satisfy my Phil’s craving just sopping some up with a biscuit. Owner Phil Pace has put together an amazing BBQ Joint even though he wasn’t a grand champion or renowned pitmaster (though he has come to be both in his own right).
