Contest – The Q Card – John Mueller – Free BBQ Meal for 10 People

The Q Card is at it again with an even better contest than last week. It’s pretty insane. Here are the details:

“We had such great response to last week’s giveaway of a brisket smoked by John Mueller that we’re having another giveaway this weekend, courtesy of John. And it’s an awesome one. The closest prediction for the final score of this Sunday’s Titans @ Cowboys game (3:15 PM Central) gets a meal for 10 catered by John during the Texas-Nebraska game (Sat, Oct. 16, 2:30 PM Central) – brisket, sausage, & trimmings. And The Q Card.”

More details, “Again, like last week, this is not a joke. John Mueller will cater your party of 10! (In case of a tie, we will draw a name from a hat.) Don’t live near Austin? No worries. As John said, “BBQ flies.” If you win, he’ll ship it to you, so wherever you are, enter!!! The only thing that is bad about this giveaway is that I can’t win it.”

Who wouldn’t want an entire BBQ meal prepared for you by John Mueller for you and 9 of your friends? You’d be crazy not to enter for a shot.

It’s really easy to enter. Here are the ways:
You can email Drew your prediction at
You can leave a comment under the post here
Post it to Facebook here

Not BBQ – Review – Taqueria Cuernavaca – Ventura, CA

It really confounds me that there are so many bad Mexican restaurants in Southern California. It convinces me that the Hispanic community here is most likely cooking at home instead of going out as I think they’d find most of these places unacceptable. Come to think of it, it seems that a lot of restaurants (Chinese, Italian, Japanese, etc.) just seem to phone it in, figuring mediocre is good enough for the masses. It’s sad actually, but I guess that’s what makes a gem of a place even more special. I digress though.

I wanted to do a little piece on a Mexican joint near me that takes great pride in putting out quality food that is far superior to almost anywhere I’ve been. Taqueria Cuernavaca in Ventura, California (on Ventura Avenue) is one of those places that you don’t want others to know about because it’ll get too crowded, but since they’ve made me happy with meal after meal I figured I’d return the favor. One thing that I love about this place (other than the food, the sauces, and the scratch made chips) is that they have a sign that says ‘this is not fast food’, which pretty much lets you know it’ll take some time, but it’ll be worth it.

Michelle and I get tacos every time we go (although I’ve never seen a dish come out of their kitchen that doesn’t look amazing), so just I’ll let the pictures of these tacos speak for themselves.

Potato tacos

Carne asada, pastor (yes that’s a pineapple slice on top), and suadero

Kevin’s BBQ Joints – Official Launch – BBQ Joint Search Engine

After two years of researching and planning, I am finally happy to report that I have launched my beta-version of Kevin’s BBQ Joints – BBQ Joint Search Engine. The over 3,000+ BBQ joints can be searched by city/state, zip code, or street address as well as a general search by individual state.

One key feature that we knew was important was the ability to filter out BBQ chains if you didn’t want to have them come up in your search (you’ll notice the ‘filter out chains’ to the right of the search button). Test it out to see what the results are.

Another important aspect to the site are the compilations of joints that sell their meat online and those that sell their rubs and sauces online.

The main reason I did this was for you to have ability to find BBQ (hopefully good BBQ) wherever you are or wherever you are traveling too.

Look for more features to be added in the near future that will add further to your BBQ joint and BBQ experience. Also, if I’m missing a joint, if a new one crops up, or if sadly one closes, please feel free to contact me to let me know. I am going to be updating this site daily.

Backyard BBQ Concert with Dave Matthews

Just found this interesting. If you’re a Dave Matthews fan and want to see him up close and very personal (and have an unlimited amount of funds), you’re in luck. He’s doing a private concert (it’s a concert and BBQ) in Hidden Hills, CA on August 22nd at the home of Kim and Rob Cavallo (Rob produced one of Dave’s albums).

Tickets start at $ 1,000.00 each, but if money isn’t an object, you’ll have the Dave Matthews experience of a lifetime. The proceeds raised from the concert will go toward Heschel West’s Tuition Assistance program, which provides need-based scholarship to students. You can find more information about the concert here.

For that sort of price you better also get some of the best brisket, pulled pork, and ribs you’ve ever had. You can still purchase tickets here.

New BBQ Joint – Cowboy Way BBQ – Solvang, CA

When you think of Solvang, you think of a little, albeit touristy, Danish village with motels that have windmills, statues of Hans Christian Andersen and the Little Mermaid, and some really great breakfast spots (seriously) . So you wouldn’t expect to find a BBQ Joint crop up here. The Santa Barbara Independent is reporting that Cowboy Way BBQ just opened it’s doors in this city a stones throw from the Santa Ynez wine country. Here’s the story.

From the article, “Although he grew up grilling Santa Maria style, owner Daniel Placencia traveled to Kansas City, “Missouruh,” as he puts it, to perfect his southern BBQ skills before opening the first—wildly successful—The Cowboy Way BBQ restaurant in Palm Springs.”

If you’re interested in stopping by, here’s a map:

I’m about an hour south of here so I’ll stop by some time to give a full report. Until then, here’s a link to reviews of their Palm Springs joint:

BBQ Joint Takeover News – The Beach Pit BBQ

I’m a sucker for takeover news and learning what parent company owns what other smaller companies. Most times it would shock you to learn that your favorite product was owned by another completely different brand or even sister brands with brands that really don’t go together (take a look at this link for Kraft as an example).

On a little smaller than mega-brand news, according to the Orange County Register, Costa Mesa based The Beach Pit BBQ has acquired Huntington Beach based Smokin’ Mo’s BBQ. They are looking to further expand their BBQ brand throughout Orange County. Not sure if they are planning on keeping the Smokin’ Mo’s BBQ name or transitioning them to The Beach Pit BBQ. I have been to location in Newport Beach and was impressed with my meal.

To continue the Orange County connection, it’s interesting that Tim DeCinces, founder of The Beach Pit BBQ, is the son of former Angels third baseman Doug DeCinces.

Best and Worst BBQ Food – Yahoo! Health

David Zinczenko, author of Eat This, Not That has come out with his list of common BBQ items that you should or shouldn’t eat (not that this list will stop me or anyone I know who loves gorging themselves at holiday BBQ’s). He covers best/worst meat, side, snack, and salad. I think what really stuck out for me was the amount of sodium and saturated fat that some of these contain.

Here’s the list

Big Apple Block Part – Part 2

I’ve been trying to get my head around the hundreds of photos and tweets from those taking part in the event and those that are there for the amazing cue, so I came up with the idea to have links to the twitpic/tweetphoto/flickr pages and twitter accounts to easily jump in to see what’s happening (or get a good look back at the festivities). Big Apple Block Party

I’ve always heard great things about the Big Apple Block Party, but never really knew much about it until this year, when I knew a few of the participants and paid a little more attention to what it was all about. In doing this though it made me much more jealous of the fact that (1) I wasn’t in New York this weekend and (2) I couldn’t sample all of the amazing BBQ.
