I visited Southern Soul in early February of 2011 during my "Southern Expedition" which was a trip down through NC, Georgia and Florida in which I sampled a ton of BBQ,
It was actually Kevin Kelly from this website that suggested that I "Had" to visit Southern Soul if no one else during my trip. Kevin was very helpful to me in suggesting possible BBQ Joint destinations.
My visit to Southern Soul was less than a year after they had to rebuild the old gas station that was their restaurant due to an Electrical Fire just two weeks after being featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
I was immediately impressed by the HUGE Lang smokers they had outside, three in the back and one just outside of their front door! I met the co-owners Griffin Bufkin and Harrison Sapp who were both very hospitable and were kind to give me a tour, introducing me to their staff and seeing the wonderful meats being smoked to perfection on their rigs. I took a few pictures of my visit which can be seen here in a review I did for my blog "Oshawa Ogre's Views, News &BBQ's" http://oshawalaser.com/Blog/2011/02/12/bbq-joint-review-and-profile-southern-soul-barbeque-st-simon-island-georgia/
I was treated to a Sampler plate of Brisket, Pulled Pork and Ribs and they had a wonderful taste that was complimented by their sauce of which they have 4 flavours, North Carolina Vinegar, South Carolina Mustard, a Hot & Spicy and their Sweet Georgia Brown.
All 4 flavours worked in perfect harmony with the meats, But I especially liked the Sweet Georgia Brown of which I bought a bottle of to bring home to Canada (by the way that bottle is finished now and the friends that tried it here with me want me to get more of it! which I may do at the Southern Soul Website which is http://southernsoulbbq.com
For sides I had the Brunswick Stew and Collard Greens both of which were excellent and first time experiences for me. I washed it down with some Blenheim Ginger Ale, another first. Wow it has to be the best Ginger Ale on the planet! It has a spicy hot flavour that goes perfect with BBQ, They also have many other soft drinks that regional in the southern States such as Cheerwine another fantastic drink that is from North Carolina and is a staple in North Carolina BBQ Joints.
I rated the restaurant the full 5 stars which I do not think I would normally rate a restaurant that high but in this case they deserve it. with Griffin and Harrison's determination in rebuilding from that devastation fire and making my dining experience so pleasant and informative to the perfect BBQ food, I left there wishing I lived in St. Simons Island Georgia so I could make it my regular BBQ Joint.
